How to Choose the Right Desk Height for Your Posture

How to Choose the Right Desk Height for Your Posture

The Forgotten Ergonomic Dimension

Professionals will spend thousands on a premium ergonomic chair to cure their neck and shoulder pain, only to realize the pain persists. Why? Because they ignored the second half of the ergonomic equation: desk height. If your desk is too high or too low, even the best chair in the world cannot save your posture.

The Standard Desk Height Trap

The industry standard for office table height sits between 730mm and 750mm. This height was historically standardized to fit the average male standing around 5’10”. If you are significantly taller or shorter than this, a standard desk is actively working against your body mechanics.

How to Find Your Perfect Height

Your desk height should be dictated by your seating position, not the other way around. Follow this simple test:

  1. Adjust your chair so your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Relax your shoulders completely and bend your elbows to exactly 90 degrees.
  3. Your desk surface should sit just below your forearms. You should not have to hike your shoulders up to type, nor should you have to lean forward and hunch over.

What to Do if Your Desk is the Wrong Height

If your office table is too high, do not lower your chair—this will ruin your lower body circulation. Instead, raise your chair until your arms rest perfectly on the desk, and purchase a dedicated ergonomic footrest to support your dangling feet. If you are exceptionally tall and your desk is too low, you may need furniture risers or a specialized executive table built with taller dimensions.
