One of the most common mistakes in corporate office design is purchasing a stunning boardroom table without measuring the actual room dimensions. A conference table is useless if executives cannot pull their chairs back, or if team members have to turn sideways to squeeze past the walls.
The 3 Critical Spatial Measurements
To ensure your meeting room feels comfortable rather than claustrophobic, follow these non-negotiable architectural guidelines:
- The 1.2-Meter Wall Clearance: Always leave a minimum of 1.2 meters of open walkway between the edge of your conference table and the nearest wall, pillar, or credenza. This allows a seated person to push their chair back fully and stand up without bumping into obstacles.
- Per-Person Edge Allowance: Allocate at least 700mm of linear table length per seated participant. Cramming people closer together causes shoulder bumping during intense keyboard typing or document review.
- Screen Viewing Distance: If your boardroom features a presentation display or television screen, ensure the distance to the furthest seat is no more than 4 to 5 times the diagonal screen size to maintain legibility.
